Q. What is the best way to contact you?

A. When I'm not reading or writing or eating cookies, I'm checking my e-mail. So e-mail me: mich_meadows@hotmail.com

Q. How did you start writing books for children?

A. I have always loved poetry. When my son was born, I read to him all the time and re-discovered the joy of poetry and children's literature. I sold my first book when my son was about 2 years old.

Q. Do you give talks about your books?

A. I love to meet young readers at schools and libraries. Through an interactive 30-minute presentation, I show children how an idea turns into a book. I also enjoy speaking to librarians, teachers, and other grown-ups at conferences. Contact me at mich_meadows@hotmail.com for fees and scheduling.

Q. Where do your ideas come from?

A. My ideas come from my life. I wrote The Way the Storm Stops after rocking my son to sleep during a storm. I wrote Pilot Pups because I was inspired by the toy airplanes and helicopter that sat on top of my son's bookshelf for years. After I found out that Simon & Schuster was interested in a second Pups book, I envisioned them riding motorcycles. Vrooom! Hibernation Station came about because I have always wished that I could hibernate during the winter. And the Piggies emerged because of all the fun I have enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) with my son. It is a good thing that he likes to be part of the books!

Q. Do you work with a literary agent?

A. Yes, I am represented by the amazing Rosemary Stimola of the Stimola Literary Studio. I sold my first book, The Way the Storm Stops, on my own through the slush pile. Rosemary sold my second book Pilot Pups and my other forthcoming titles. Three weeks after submitting Pilot Pups to publishers, Rosemary called with good news. Multiple publishers made an offer on the manuscript!

Q. Do you have any writing advice?

A. Read, write, read, write, read, read, revise! I also recommend checking out the resources available from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

Q. Can you read my picture book manuscript?

A. I don't critique manuscripts. But there are lots of authors and literary specialists who list their critique services on the Web. SCBWI also offers opportunities for critiques with editors and agents at conferences.

Q. Does everything you write become a book?

A. No way! I have written plenty of things that will never see the light of day. When I write something that doesn't quite work, I make a decision to either revise it or let it go completely and write something new. Which is why my writing philosophy is: good thing there is no limit to the imagination--there is always another story to make up!
