Why I Love It: With just 63 words, What Will Hatch? is short, snappy, and fun to read aloud. The book is a lively guessing game full of clever language. The format makes for a natural page turner. Readers learn about animals that hatch from eggs (oviparous animals). Succinct and well-organized back matter reveals interesting facts, such as time in egg and how many siblings the animal has. Animals featured: caterpillar, goldfinch, crocodile, penguin, robin, sea turtle, platypus, and tadpole. Chicken egg development facts are also included. What Will Hatch? is now available in board book format. This book especially resonates with me because it reminds me of taking nature walks with my son when he was very young. A companion book called What Will Grow? is slated for 2017. Looking forward to it!

From School Library Journal: “The book is designed for use with very young children…Ghahremani's folk-art gouache paintings on wood, in soft blues, browns, and greens, are filled with patterns and animals with softly rounded bodies…”

Author Tidbit: Jennifer Ward loves nature and lives high in the treetops, surrounded by deer, fox, squirrels, and other wildlife.

Illustrator Tidbit: Susie gets inspired by reading, visiting museums, going for a hike, talking with friends, making diagrams, listening to music, looking at old photos, and paying attention to dreams.
