Why I Love It: Closing out 2016 with a profile of my all-time favorite picture book and favorite author (Eileen Spinelli) – Here Comes the Year is short, snappy, and describes the special qualities of each month with a sweet, rhyming text that begs to be read aloud. I love the diverse cast of characters. With poetic text and priceless expressions on the characters’ faces, this book is a great gift and a must have for young children in my opinion. My favorite poem of all is for the month of February.

I am the February frost

strumming the air,

etching feathery sketches of ice,

glistening everywhere,

zinging the tips of your fingers,

tinting your ears and your nose

redder than holly berries,

nipping your toes.

From Publishers Weekly: “The author chooses one defining characteristic, then personifies it in eight active, descriptive lines…Lyrical and contemplative, this volume may well inspire readers to take a closer look at the world around them and to consider other events in nature that define their experiences. ”

Author Tidbit: As a young child, Eileen Spinelli spent Saturdays in the library, fell in love with words, and decided to become a writer. Her journey reminds me of mine because she says she nearly failed geometry but excelled in poetry. I can relate! Eileen has written numerous books for children, and when she isn’t writing, she reads, pours tea, and watches the stars with her husband.

Illustrator Tidbit: Growing up in North Carolina, Keiko Narahashi explored the countryside. She studied art at the Parsons School of Design, and she studied painting at Bard College.
